Hidden Gems of Southern California: Sherman Library and Gardens

Several times in passing conversation, my boyfriend kept bringing up this place called the Sherman Library and Gardens. Located off of PCH in Corna Del Mar, the library/gardens are difficult to find, especially if you aren’t looking for it. I was surprised that I haven’t seen it myself considering that I’ve driven that route as many times as I have.  When we were planning our date day a couple weeks back I suggested that we go check it out with the promise of brunch and the possible discovery of a new workspace.

About Sherman Library and Gardens

According to their website:

Sherman Library & Gardens is a 2.2 acre Corona del Mar horticultural retreat. The Gardens provide a museum of living plants, displayed amidst a setting of immaculate gardens, patios and conservatories linked together by wide brick walkways, beds blooming with seasonal flowers and bubbling tile fountains.

They boast about their numerous gardens which include the botanical, succulent, and herb gardens and also host private events. There is also a cafe located on the grounds which serves lunch, brunch, and afternoon tea.

Our Experience

Overall this was a great experience. Parking was easy as there is a free parking lot next to the venue (and everyone knows that parking can be especially difficult near the ocean). The woman at the ticket booth was incredibly friendly and helpful and the holiday decorations added a nice touch. They were even holding an annual Christmas Light Walk event that evening but unfortunately, we had already made plans.

There was so much to see and do despite it being a small venue – we really took our time touring the grounds. It was also surprisingly romantic. We were often seen cuddling in some remote garden on the premises, most likely to the dismay of other patrons. And no, we didn’t have brunch. A little sad about that but I think we arrived too late.

I really would love to go back again and finally experience their brunch, afternoon tea, and Christmas Light Walk. I would also love to bring my mom because I know that this would be something that she would enjoy. Highly recommend that you check it out if you have the chance.
